Here is how it works. You are put down somewhere in Leiden and told which place to reach. A line on the road shows you the shortest way there, and the clock shows how long that way should take. That time is not a number I picked. I drove these errands myself — twenty-five of them, on the real map — to find out what they actually cost. What came out is simple: a route's length, plus a price for every corner in it. A right-angle turn costs about seven seconds. So a short errand full of canals can be harder than a long straight one, and the clock knows that before you do. Two things lie on the tarmac. Energy gives you three seconds well above anything the car can do on its own. Oil covers half the lane — drive into it and the wheel stops meaning much for a second and a half, and a third of your speed goes with it. You can steer around the oil if you saw it coming. That is the whole of the trick. Get there in time and you can run the same errand again for a better time, or be sent somewhere new. Your best time stays in your browser. There is no leaderboard and nothing to buy.
